Collect licence monitoring samples at the Kiama treatment plant
You are a trainee field technician in Field Sampling and Environmental Monitoring.
What has happened
Kiama Shire holds an environment protection licence for its sewage treatment plant and Veritas collects the fortnightly licence samples under job CJ-26-0429. The sampling plan lists the inlet, the final effluent point and the receiving water upstream and downstream, with composite and grab samples and on-site measurements of pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and temperature. A recent nonconformance recorded missing field pH readings because a meter battery went flat, and a hazard report found an unrestrained gas cylinder in a field vehicle. Tariq Haddad wants the kit, the meter calibration and the vehicle pre-start done properly and recorded before departure.
Deliverables
- Equipment register calibration record
- Vehicle pre-start record
- Field sheet with on-site measurements
- Completed chain of custody form
- Receipt confirmation from sample reception

Systems to use
Equipment and Calibration Register
Lists every item of measuring and testing equipment with its calibration interval, last and next calibration, verification checks and service status.
Sample Register
The laboratory information register of every sample received, its matrix, tests, storage, holding time and progress from receipt to reported.
WHS Incident and Hazard Register
Records injuries, exposures, spills, near misses and hazards across the laboratories, materials hall, vehicles and field sites with the actions taken to close them.
Units of competency
Current on training.gov.au for the Laboratory Operations as at 10 September 2026.

Evidence guide
Observe the meter calibration performed and recorded before use, containers filled and preserved as the method requires, measurements recorded at the time with the meter identifier, and a chain of custody that matches the containers exactly. The pre-start and cylinder restraint must be evidenced. Samples must arrive chilled and within holding time.
